A Critique of Sources of Nigerian History
Aknkunmi Alao
Some sources of Nigerian History are inadequate for reconstructing the past while some are prone to distortion and manipulation. Against this background, four major sources of Nigerian History are identified and discussed in this book. These are: Oral Traditions; Arabic Sources; European Travellers' Accounts, Missionary and Archival Sources; and, Archaeology. The sources are analysed independently in separate chapters before a nexus is established in a concluding chapter. Some works that relied mainly on these sources are also reviewed with the intention of placing them within context in Nigerian historiography. Students of tertiary educational institutions and general researchers will find the analysis enlightening and useful.
