Extracting Reality from Organic Theory: Semimicroscale Applications in Electrophilic Aromatic Substitution Rates, Pheromone and Local Anesthetic Syntheses

To enhance the student experience, the University of South Carolina, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, has adopted several new experiments into the curriculum of the organic chemistry majors and honors laboratories. Each experiment involves a particular reaction, or reactions, for which the theory is thoroughly explained throughout the body of this text. All work within is the culmination of experimental trial and error in the procedural design of successful, reproducible experiments in organic chemistry. The challenge was to develop successful semimicroscale techniques using only the resources, apparatus, and instrumentation readily available to the students, while confining them to the laboratory time constraints.
