William James (1842 ?1910), famous American psycho­logist and philosopher, was one of the strongest pro­po­nents of the school of Functionalism in psychology, and Pragmatism in philosophy. William studied medicine, physiology and biology before recieving a professional medical degree from Harvard university, where he spent his entire academic career. With his monumental Prin­ciples of Psychology (1890) James gained widespread recognition.
