The German Arctic Expedition of 1869-1870
Karl Koldewey
The German expedition to the Arctic in the years 1869-1870 was a milestone in Arctic research. Under the leadership of Captain Karl Koldewey his crew was suspended and in great dangers on their way through the central regions of the Arctic. They lost their ship, the "Hansa". This expedition was also a competition of two different generations of ships: between the sailing ship, the "Hansa" left behind during the expedition and the steam-powered "Germania".
