Al-maturidi Und Die Sunnitische Theologie in Samarkand (Islamic Philosophy, Theology, and Science)
Ulrich Rudolph
Examining the teachings of Al-Maturidi, the prominent 10th-century Hanafi scholar from Samarqand, this text describes their principal characteristics and situates them in the history of kalam. The first part investigates the development of Hanafi thought in Transoxania before Maturidi's time. The second part deals with the other religious groups (in particular the Mu'tazilites) which emerged during his lifetime. The final section shows how Al-Maturidi explained and defended the position of his teachers. In the process he reformed traditional views and developed his own theology, which then became the basis of a new tradition, namely the Maturidite school.
