The Awakening
Kate Chopin
The Awakening, is a novel by Kate Chopin, published in the 1899s. Originally titled A Lonely Soul, the novel describes the great struggle of a strong and intelligent young mother to achieve sexual and personal emancipation in the environment of slavery in the southern United States after the war. When it was first published, it was widely condemned for its depiction of sexuality and marital infidelity in all its aspects. Today it is considered a historical work of the first most important feminist fiction of all time.
