In the township of Cassimina, a long-awaited legend takes shape. Krampel Paddymeyer, a 16-year-old orphan, has just learned about the power locked deep within him - the power to wield a great sword of the past - when his master dies following an orc raid. Orphaned again, Krampel sets out and becomes a bounty hunting loner, taking bounties without passion or prejudice toward the intended target. Enter a dwarf prince from a kingdom in the west, and the stakes grow higher: The dwarves of Lowbridge want the second criminal for crimes against a neighboring realm. When Krampel and his new apprentice meet the dwarf prince, they join forces to bring the criminal - someone from Krampel's not-so-forgotten past - to justice.
