When Esther Lewis was a little girl, she lived in books. While she was bounced around from foster home to foster home, they were her safe place. Now she's twenty-six, living on her own, and days away from finishing her master's thesis when tragedy strikes again: her foster parents' home has burned down, and no one is quite sure where her parents are. Esther returns to Harpridge, Mississippi, the small town she left behind when she was eighteen. Her plan to leave as quickly as she came is interrupted when an officer with a personal vendetta accuses her foster sister, Juniper, of the arson.
