The Amateur Cracksman by E. W. Hornung
A national sports hero, Arthur J. Raffles is a prominent member of London society. As a cricketer, he regularly represents England in practice matches. He uses it as a cover to commit a series of burglaries, mainly stealing valuable jewelry from London's elite, for thrill and profit. He is assisted in this by his friend, the young Harry "Bunny" Manders, who idealizes Raffles as a sportsman. Both men are constantly under the surveillance of Scotland Yard Inspector Mackenzie, who is always thwarted in his attempts to impute the crimes to Raffles.
