Bob Stevens and Sharon Moore have two things in common - they both have terminal cancer and they both want to go to Mars; it's the number one thing on their bucket lists. Bob has the resources to have a spaceship built, and Sharon has the smarts to make their dream come true. Over the course of a year the Mars 1 spaceship is built, as is a rover for driving on the surface of Mars. During that time a romance blossoms between the Bob and Sharon, leading to a wedding. After launch on July 4, 2020, it's six months in space for the trip to Mars, landing successfully on the red planet in February 2021. Then there are several weeks of exploring Mars resulting in the discovery of indigenous life with ramifications for life on Earth as well as elsewhere in the universe. Bob had hoped that going to Mars would get him far away from emotional baggage he carries around, but that was not to be. Then triumph for the first humans on Mars turns to tragedy, as their Mars dream becomes a nightmare.
