Siegmund, a German orphan, and Joseph, the son of a rich Jewish physician, become best friends during their first year at the University of Medicine in Berlin in 1933. During the summer holiday which they spend together beside the Baltic Sea, Siegmund realizes that his feelings toward Joseph are more than platonic. Following his expulsion from university in 1935 because of his Jewish origins, Joseph disappears without a trace. In 1940, Siegmund is given a mission by his boss, Herr Adler, to escort two fugitive Jews to a hospital in Denmark, ostensibly for medical reasons. Siegmund gladly accepts, driven by the hope of using the same escape route for Joseph, if he can find him in time. Nevertheless, Siegmund will soon discover Herr Adler's greedy nature as well as the real reason behind his apparently altruistic intentions.
