Randolph Caldecott, March 22, 1846 - February 12, 1886, was an English artist and illustrator, born in Chester. The Caldecott Medal was named in his honor. He practiced his art mainly in book illustrations. His skills as an artist were quickly and generously recognized by the Royal Academy. Caldecott greatly influenced the illustration of children's books during the 19th century. Two books illustrated by him, valued at one shilling each, were published every Christmas for eight years. Caldecott also illustrated novels and tales of foreign travel, made humorous drawings depicting hunting and fashion life, drew cartoons and sketches of the Houses of Parliament inside and out,
