Caldecott greatly influenced the illustration of children's books during the 19th century. Two books illustrated by him, valued at one shilling each, were published every Christmas for eight years. Caldecott also illustrated novels and tales of foreign travel, made humorous drawings depicting hunting and fashion life, drew cartoons and sketches of the Houses of Parliament inside and out,
