The Scarlet Car

Billy Winthrop, the Governor of the city of Bolton, practically bankrupts his father, Samuel Winthrop. Around this time, Paul Revere Forbes, a teller at Bolton's bank and Beatrice's father, who loves Billy, discovers that Cyrus Peabody, president of the bank, has lost $ 35,000 of the bank's money on speculation. Forbes confronts Peabody and, in the ensuing fight, Peabody is apparently killed and the body is placed in a car. The next morning, however, the body disappears. Beatrice, now presumably an orphan, is about to be forced to marry Peabody's son Ernest when Billy rescues her, and they escape from her during a storm arriving at an old cabin.
