Set in Rome in 1570, the film charts the rivalry between Cardinal Giovanni de Medici (Lang) and General Belmonte (Robert Atkins). The General carries out a brutal murder and confesses his sins to the Cardinal but rather than accept the punishment for his crime, the General has the Cardinal's brother arrested for the murder.
