Beethoven Symphonies 1-9 Overtures
Herman Scherchen
Beethoven Symphonies 1-9 Overtures
Herman Scherchen
Originally recorded between 1951-1954 for the Westminster label, nothing in this set sounds of its time - neither Hermann Scherchen's captivating, almost contemporary approach to Beethoven, nor the sound quality suggest a purely historic reissue. Many of these recordings are issued for the first time on CD and are made available in the digital supply chain for the first time remastered from the original sources. This cycle (with the overtures and rehearsal material included) is a prize gem in our celebrations of the Beethoven year.
-- This is not Scherchen's Beethoven, it's Beethoven's Beethoven --
o Complete symphony cycle in mono in remarkable sound quality
o Newly transferred from the original tapes and remastered to the highest standards
o Plenty of bonus content with a rehearsal of Wellington's Victory, overtures and the famous 1958 Eroica in Stereo: "probably the most exciting Beethoven recording ever made" (Die Zeit)
o First international release of symphonies 3, 5, 6 (mono), 7 and 9
o Original covers, new liner notes by Marco Frei and rare Scherchen photos
o A true rediscovery and important contribution to the Beethoven catalogue
