Fire Music
Archie Shepp
This overlooked album by tenor saxophonist Archie Shepp(b. 1937) was recorded for Impulse! in 1965.
Shepp contributes three originals; 'Hambone'(a studio and live version), 'Los Olvidados' & 'Malcolm, Malcolm - semper Malcolm' written for Malcolm X with a brief poem from Shepp.
There are also fine versions of Duke Ellington's 'Prelude to a Kiss' and an unlikely 'The Girl From Ipanema'.
The passionate and heartfelt playing on 'Fire Music', created during the Civil Rights era, can best be described as avant garde jazz with respect for the tradition and still has a powerful impact over 50 years later.
