Chamber Jazz Sextet
Allyn Ferguson's Chamber Jazz Sextet obviously catered for the listener who appreciated a deft blending of writing and improvising skills. Ferguson scored six of the pieces, calling in Bill Holman to arrange 'Lady is a Tramp' and 'I Could Write a Book.' This is an album of efficient, well played, clean West Coast jazz by a group of musicians who certainly deserved wider recognition than they received. Trumpeter Dent Hand, altoist Frank Leal and saxophonist Modesto Briseno are in top form on this album, which commemorated the release of the film version of Richard Rodgers "Pal Joey," a musical adaptation of short stories by John O'Hara which appeared first as a stage production.
