John Coltrane
Between the spring of 1957 and the winter of 1958, John Coltrane developed musically in great strides - and the recording of Lush Life falls into this period. In 1957 he worked for six months with Thelonious Monk and this collaboration had a great share in Coltrane's progress. Lush Life contains his first recordings as a leader, here he plays for the first time with a trio without piano and his first extended interpretation of a ballad - the titular Lush Life by Billy Strayhorn.
