World renowned music star and former president of Haiti, Michel Martelly first rose to prominence as one of the island's best known musicians. Known by his stage name "Sweet Micky," Martelly modernized a style of Haitian dance music known as compas music (kompa), sung predominantly in the Creole language, by using smaller bands relying on synthesizers and electronic instruments. Martelly has released numerous studio albums since 1989 and continues to remain active - musically and socio-politically.
