An original musical armoury and various backgrounds steer the work of 3Men in a BoaT towards an interesting blend of African grooves, chamber music, musette and lyrical jazz. The paths of accordionist Philippe Thuriot and bass player Kristof Roseeuw have been crossing for many years. They have both toured with New York saxophonist Ellery Eskelin and famous guitarist René Lussier from, amongst others bands, Fred Friths guitar 4tet. They have left a musical impression on Senegal together and shared the stage at the cultural opening of the Olympics in Athens in 2004. Apart from that Thuriot and Roseeuw were both a part of the radioKUKA orchestra, a quartet assembled by Roseeuw at the request of classical radio station KLARA. During their time spent together, a desire to establish a more permanent ensemble and highlight Thuriot's composing skills casually started growing. Roseeuw soon involved drummer Lionel Beuvens after he fell in for a concert of Too Noisy Fish, and the vibe felt right straight away. After their first public appearance as a trio at one of stand-up comedian Wouter Deprez's soirees for like-minded artists, their initial enthusiasm got confirmed and 3Men in a BoaT was born.
