Among the papers found from Nazi doctor Joseph Mengele, is a diary written by Helene Hanneman. The diary starts Helene is about to wake up their children to go to school when the police burst into the house. They want to take her husband and their children. According to the order of December 16, 1942 all gypsies belonging to the territories conquered by the Nazis should be locked up in concentration camps. The police tell Helene that since she is German she does not have to accompany them, but decides to share the fate of her family. The family is deported to Auschwitz. The rest of this story chronicles her sixteen month stay in the extermination camp.
