Geneva Pomolo, a former teacher, is enjoying her retirement until her friend, Marsela Jones, is found dead in her home. There are no signs of foul play, but Geneva is suspicious. An autopsy later reveals Marsela Jones was suffocated. For a nice older lady, Marsela had made a lot of people angry, including her neighbor, Debbie Dalton-who's hiding a political secret with the mayor that Marsela unfortunately discovered. Geneva also has doubts about Marsela's granddaughter Tina, who seems a bit flighty and also engages in suspicious behavior. And then there is Tina's gambling-obsessed boyfriend. Geneva discovers a valuable bracelet is missing from Marsela's house, and a trusted handyman has a house key. Could he be the culprit? Or could it be another man who holds a long-standing grudge against the victim? Geneva sorts through the suspects to find a motive for the murder, for she is determined to get justice for her friend-even if she must put herself in danger.
