Excerpt from The Itinerary of Archbishop Baldwin Through Wales, A. D. 1188, Vol. 2 The exclamation of Toxilus is obviously grounded upon a double meaning, assigned to the name of Lucris (quasi a lucro), from whence he takes occasion to prognosticate a good omen to the purchaser. How valuable is a name and an omen or how valu able is that name which carries its good 0mm with it! And the pander's reply plainly shews that he understood it in that light. A similar superstition still prevails in some parts of Italy, and in other places on the Continent. I mean, the custom of giving to infants, as their baptismal name, the name of the saint whose festival is the nearest to the birthday of the child; from which name, if it is capable of a fortunate or favour able translation, the good fortune or disposition of the child is inferred. This day is also, in all catholic countries, more honoured in the observance than the birthday. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
