After serving six years for British Army intelligence in Cyprus and Berlin, U. S. Air Force Captain Ian Black suddenly finds himself thrust into the mission creep war, called Vietnam. He is given the task of ascertaining how developed the North Vietnamese IADS (Integrated Air Defense System) is, and then determine ways to prevent the increasing loss of American planes, from missiles and AAA guns. In order to obtain a tally of the PAVN weapons, he has to fly over North Vietnam in an F-4 Phantom, as the GIB (guy in back). All the while, Soviet SA-2 missiles and AAA guns are aimed at the aircraft. Using anti-radiation missiles, Ian has to destroy the Fan Song radars before the enemy can fire and guide the "telephone pole" to his aircraft. Can Ian survive all the dangers posed by the war and yet return to Giselle, who is waiting for him? The Osborns novel On The President's Vietnam Mission covers all the wartime action and drama, including the loss of LS-85 on top of Phou Pha Thi.
