Songs of Orpheus is part of the Ancient Greek Heroes series: a collection of original poetry celebrating the heroes and heroines of the myths, stories and legends that came to form the bedrock of the Ancient Greek pantheon. Orpheus was a gifted singer, seer, and poet who lived in the time of the ancient Grecian gods and heroes. Orpheus' songs were so beautiful, so compelling, and so enthralling that birds fell silent, trees gathered together, and wild beasts became instantly tame in order to listen. Orpheus joined Jason and his Argonauts in his expedition to recover the Golden Fleece: proving his value by protecting the Argonauts from the wiles of the Sirens by weaving about his ship a protective song of power. When Orpheus lost his wife Eurydice to snakebite, he passed the gates of Death to descend into the depths of Hades and beg the King of the Dead to release the spirit of his wife so that she might live again. And the King of the Dead agreed. The stories of Orpheus have been sung down the centuries: inspiring generations of songwriters and poets down the ages to celebrate the most famous musician and singer of Ancient Greece.
